My most disappointing games of this gen were all looter shooters. Both Destiny games, both Divisions, and Anthem. Division 2 turned things around with Warlords but it's crazy to realize this.
The loot shooter genre is an ambitious idea if done correctly. But yeah looter shooters are an underwhelming genre this gen.

Do you think the genre can live up to its potential next-gen? Mechanically speaking, all of the games I mentioned are actually very good. They just need that extra push to really make them must-play experiences.

Any genre has a chance to thrive if done correctly. The problem is no one is treating these games for what they are: shooters with RPG elements - it needs an equal balance of strong narrative, solid gameplay, and likable/memorable characters.
