Yeah, the gameplay is repetitive and it had a lot to be desired for, but there were other games released in the same year that also had repetitive gameplay or were games in popular AAA IPs typically get softly criticized compared to the heat Mafia 3 got?
Also, the gameplay is not that bad, it had some interesting mechanics, though I wished they were fleshed out a bit more.
Also the attention to detail is great in the game. Like how the police in the game will respond differently and more attentively depending on where you commit a crime in New Bordeaux. It's such a small but very cool thing and honestly I don't hear a lot of people talking about it
Also, the DLC was a bit brilliant yet horrendous. The first DLC was great and fits the mold the base game had to but the last two felt inconsistent but introduced a bunch of cool things, especially the final DLC pack Introducing the investigations mechanic.
So, yeah it's not a perfect game and it's far from being 2016's GOTY, but it is an ok game (with too much hate) with a strong and extremely bold narrative and considering that was Hangar 13's first project, I think they did ok considering it was a sequel to a AAA IP.
