Nearly everyone who read the last draft of my pilot recommend I cut a final twist. Instead, I added two lines of dialogue to the first ten pages, and now all my readers said they love the ending. Good example of looking for the note beneath the note.

When you get a negative note, especially from a gatekeeper, you need to do a gut check. Does that note confirm something you always suspected in your secret heart was wrong with your script...or is that person simply wrong? No one can answer that question except for you.

Please for the love of all that is holy, break the cycle. As soon as a writer realizes they don't have to be cruel & conniving to have a career, they will then be kind to other writers. Until one day we wake up going: 'Wow, remember when writers were mean to each other? Weird.'

Some writers abused on the way up think they have to exact revenge on the next generation because "you have to pay your dues." But other people try to make it easier for new writers so they don't have to go through the same abuse. Break the cycle. Be a force for positive change.

Here's a tip for working on characters: Go to reports in Final Draft and create a character report for characters that seem flat or just don't pop. You can see every scene they're in and all their dialogue all in one place so you can quickly and easily work on revising their arc.
