I thought it was either a thin wrapper, or a link to /usr/bin/test, but at least on my installation they're different binaries.

If you use 'test' you can omit ] as the last parameter but 'test' is three whole chatacters longer than '[', so...

Of course it works that way. What's wrong with you young people? "if" takes *any* command as the first argument and executes the "then" path when the exit code is zero. "[" ist just syntactic sugar for the "test" command and used to be a hard link ...
