In my experience the moment the ceo removes themselves too much the second in command swoops in to fill the leader role. I can name a few companies where the ceo is a figure head that lost control of the business. This is a good founder non-ceo description though.

That may happen sometimes, true. I guess what CEOs must aspire is to create a system that lasts, sets up the next CEO for success, and the organisation to thrive long after they’re gone. That’s what I remember from glancing through the book “Built to Last” in a bookstore
