A key part of the story is the slow death of independent journalism in India with the government snuffing out critical journalists/outlets or Hindu nationalist vigilantes just shooting them down. I am blown away with @RanaAyyub ’s bravery and tenacity in the face of all that.

I don’t know... I just have a lot of feelings right now. Grief, for sure, for a country that had never realized the idealistic vision it had set for itself at independence. But also, guilt, fear, and dread, etc.

We started out with the vision of becoming a sovereign socialist secular democratic republic that provides all citizens equality, liberty, justice and fraternity. But maybe we were doomed from the start.

I don’t know, but as a Kashmiri, we’ve only ever seen one side of India and it’s never been good. What is maybe different now is the pretense, at least when it comes to Kashmir.

You are right. Kashmir has never really seen democratic and humane governance. I think I just meant that the escalation of that in Kashmir, in the northeast — and the nakedness of the justification feels particularly acute at the moment.
