A google search rn landed me to this headline from just days before the midterms -- a reminder (it seems so far away now!) of the stretch where expectations were wildly different than the current reality.

nothing will ever beat how much hinged on 537 votes in our entire lifetime

Minnesota Democrats enacting a robust progressive agenda with a single seat majority they won by 321 votes is probably the strongest argument for voting.

Nearly all local election officials who have amplified false fraud conspiracies and were on Pennsylvania's ballot last week prevailed in the Republican primaries. Several had tried to block the certification of election results in 2020 or 2022.

Oakland voters passed 'democracy vouchers' last year, which would be a new model of public financing of elections emulating Seattle. But as city proposes to gut it via its budget, groups are looking for workarounds that would make a 2024 pilot possible:

A lot more detail in this thread (and article). For instance, on Kavanaugh (who crossed with liberals): "Kavanaugh said the ruling could imperil federal oversight of the Chesapeake Bay and flood control measures on the Mississippi River."

With Justice Alito writing the Clean Water Act decision handed down today, it now looks all but certain that Chief Justice Roberts has the Voting Rights Act opinion (Allen v. Milligan).

The race to replace her is tight (and expect it to remain that way), with Eric Early (R) at 18% followed by the 3 Democrats: Katie Porter at 17%, Adam Schiff at 14%, & Barbara Lee at 9%. (Reminder that this election is a Top 2 situation.)

SCOTUS conservatives today narrowed what wetlands fall under the Clean Water Act.

next opinion is Sackett v EPA - by Justice Alito - writing for 5 Justices, they reject EPA's authority to regulate wetlands with a "significant nexus" to navigable waters - the waters must have a continuous surface connection to navigable waters supremecourt.gov/opinions/22pdf

Note the important detail here that there’s a guilty plea involved here. Before getting to nullification, most cases never end up in front of a jury as defendants are threatened with hell if they take that risk and don’t accept a guilty deal.

Major voting rights decisions are set to drop in SCOTUS at some point between tomorrow and late June, including over the VRA and independent state legislature doctrine.

2) Newsom vetoed a bill passed by California Dems that'd have created statutory restrictions on solitary confinement, saying that he'd instruct the prison system to better regulate itself on the matter (spoiler: it hasn't)

2 things that are more similar than Gavin Newsom would prob admit 1) Texas Republicans are moving thru a bill that'd allow sheriffs to investigate themselves when someone dies under their watch, gutting existing statute passed after Sandra Bland's death

Newsom vetoed legal restrictions on solitary confinement saying the prison system would regulate itself... ... and (surprise!), as Piper found out, well, it hasn't.

The Mandela Act's greatest weapon may be survivors of solitary confinement testifying to the horror of the practice. But that means little if Newsom vetos the bill, as he did last yr, instead directing CA's prison system to essentially reform itself: boltsmag.org/solitary-confi

A troubling moment of Gavin Newsom's governorship: He vetoed a bill last year that'd have restricted solitary confinement in California in line with UN's definition of torture. Now survivors of solitary confinement are pushing a redo. A powerful story:

This is something that of course concerns me a lot: people talk about how twitter doesn't account for a huge amount of traffic, and sure, but that misses the visibility social media can bring, and importantly its equalizing effect for outlets of very different sizes & statures.

@Taniel, Bolts is one I contribute to. I'm certain I wouldn't have known about it if I didn't follow news/politics on Twitter. I don't think the damage that is/will be done to local/independent news can be overstated if/when Twitter becomes fully uninhabitable. 😟

This was last week, but Nancy Abudu's confirmation to the 11th Circuit is a big deal: She is a civil rights lawyer who's worked with the ACLU's Voting Rights Project against felony disenfranchisement, & for the Southern Poverty Law Center. GOP fought it.
