Hooray for Maryland: the legislature just passed Automatic Voter Registration, sending it to Governor Hogan's desk! Hogan may veto, but the bill passed both chambers with veto-proof majorities.
Groups like @indivisible410 & @commoncausemd have pushed & organized around this issue—credit to them! (Especially since this AVR news comes a day after Maryland's legislature put Election Day voter registration on Nov's ballot.)
Also good: Maryland's AVR bill that just passed moves beyond focusing on DMV (=MVA) interactions. Also applies to interactions at state's health exchanges, social service programs, & other government spaces. This is not the case in every AVR state.
Just curious what reasons one who opposes this AVR legislation would give? As a democracy we should want every citizen to vote, no?
opponents' stated reasons usually include that it's too intrusive, and that there should be some burden on voters to be actively seeking out the opportunity to vote.
Wonder what @JoeHelle & @StateRepArndt position on this idea is.
