New law will confer parole eligibility to hundreds in prison since they were kids. Plus future sentencing. In some ways this is a modest reform: VA is 23rd state to abolish life without parole for minors (see article); & its reform is still tighter than that of neighboring WV.

Law is big deal since VA virtually ended parole for anyone in 1995, an extremely punitive reform. Two limits: 1. VA's parole board has been systematically denying parole applications; that'd have to change. 2. Law doesn't affect whether kids are tried as adults in first place.

Oh great, just what we need in this country is a bunch of 30 something killers who have been in prison learning & honing their skills for when they are let out. Hope they have to at least stay in VA for life, let them reap what they sow!

It’s definitely a huge step in that direction, since most of the incarcerated in any state (specifically those of color) are brought in on small drug charges.

So Virginia has ended life without parole for minors; in fact, it's ended sentences of 20+ years without parole eligibility.
