Code is never the challenge. Well-rested comfortable people who feel emotionally safe have solved every problem I’ve put in front of them.

People build their work around their life, not the other way around. This is especially great for new parents, but everyone benefits from being able to structure their days to maximize their happiness and productivity.

People often come to me and ask “as a junior developer, how can stand out against the noise to get a response when applying for a job?” I have a tip that I only share in my 1:1’s that I’m gonna share now. I’m def gonna delete this later so screenshot it

Designing my my web-scrapper script in vanilla JavaScript this time 💥 I like to KISS, but the foundations have to be firm.

Tests are a contract we make with ourselves that the code behaves the way we said it did when we coded it. So later on when you change the code, it's a helpful reminder how and why the code works the way it does

I'm old enough to have repeatedly experienced the process of learning and getting good at hard things, but also to see that it takes years of regular work to get there. There's no shortcuts. You can be a natural but you're still nowhere near where you'll be with 5yrs of practice.

In college I planned to get a CS degree, but the intro to Aerospace class ✈️🚀 seemed way more exciting than intro to Python so I took it instead. 4 years later I got an Aero/Astro degree. 9 years later I'm leading software teams Do what brings you joy, the rest will work out

Pro tip: if you find yourself stuck, facing a big pile of small things to do and having trouble picking, prioritizing, or starting, find something else small that you enjoy doing and finish it. The momentum will propel you to take on the other tasks. Hard to start from 0 momentum

It was an honor and a privilege to appear before the House Antitrust Subcommittee this morning to share our experience from Basecamp on what it’s like to be a small tech company living in big tech’s world. We urgently need strong antitrust action!
