An older woman came into the bookstore today. I made a joke about a credit card reader issue and she said "these things are all programmed by twenty-five-year-old boys who don't comment their code" and somehow we ended up having a great conversation about programming and biases.

I said that I've met a number of older women who had been programmers, sysadmins, ME, EE, etc. in the 70s and 80s. You'd think the gender balance would have become better since then but in many areas, it's the same or worse. I couldn't convince her to jump back into tech though.

Women are the only ones who dealt with coding and programmingin the beginning. It was considered a “woman’s profession” wasn’t until men figured out the could screw it for money it suddenly became a “man’s job”

And why is our economy of not raising salaries at all for twenty five years requiring older women who were coders and engineers for 40 years to be “the woman working at the desk”
