    I registered for classes at the community college and the older woman at the desk turned out to have been a programmer in the 70s and then an engineer for Boeing for about 20 years until she got laid off, semi-retired, and worked for the CC. You never know people's stories.

    We talked about Y2038 leading up to Y2K and thought what people thought about Y2K in 1980 -- "That's a long ways away, we'll figure it out by then!" We're now closer to 2038 than to Y2K. What's fixed? Your PC may be 64-bit but *many* embedded systems are 32-bit and will fail.

    seriously, the 2038 bug is going to make the work we had to put in for y2k look like a weekend project. it's amazing how much shit will get confused to fuck when 2038 hits. EVERYTHING is going to break if unpatched

    California’s BPPE regulates for-profit schools. In April, they fined Lambda School $75k for not registering, and told them to stop running classes. Lambda told students it’s all straightened out, and kept running classes. I emailed the BPPE. Lambda School is operating illegally.

    I only speak English. Learning German, Norwegian, or other European languages never seemed to be that useful in the US and my European relatives all speak English. But I still wish I had cultural connections to Europe and language is a big part of that.

    My coworker was born in postwar Japan to an American soldier and a Japanese mother. Her mother intentionally never taught her Japanese, so she'd be more accepted. I've heard similar stories from children of Latino immigrants whose parents intentionally avoided Spanish.
