Why do we pay so much attention to such unreliable data? (I think that’s a rhetorical question.) Would we let the FDA approve/disapprove drugs based on observational data ?

Because we don't have much else. RCT data is very limited and short-term.
-
"Because we don't have much else" is not a reason for scientists, health organizations, dietitians and journalists to imply that research using unscientific data gathered using memory based assessment methods like FFQs produces valid and actionable results. /1

Underreporting is not restricted to observational studies.
-
No of course not. The study I cited wasn't an observational study. But it brings up the larger point that people cannot accurately report what they eat. It's a problem in RCTs, but it's a bigger problem in epi.

We keep hearing this over and over from doctors, dietitians and researchers. That's why we're trying to automate meal logging with computer vision. Our app (
@getbitesnap) is being used for a few dietary research studies and we're thinking of building more tools to support that. -
I eagerly await technology that A) logs consumption accurately and B) doesn't change what people eat because they're being logged.
-
I really hope AR won't be a dud so we can see this happen. Also, B) is not so bad if it can cause lasting change.

Given that calorie underreporting is incredibly well-established, it stands to reason that overconsumption of calories plays a far larger role in health-related dietary problems than most people already assign to it (as opposed to *type* of food or some other factor).

Most vital question to ask is what makes people who desire to weigh less overeat? 3 Words Man Made Food No one binges on steak eggs veggies aka real food.
-
1. Yes they do. 2. Interesting you don’t include the all-natural fruit, nuts, cheese, sweeteners, starchy veg, legumes, grains. 3. Veg and meat have been selectively bred for centuries to increase yield and palatability.
-
It’s processed food (man made food) that’s making us sick. T2D is better named “Processed Food Disease” not my words but Dr Lustig’s.pic.twitter.com/zfoKRVQgIu

3 * 24 hour recalls are considered the gold standard for self-report dietary intake for individuals - trying to sample weekdays / weekends.
-
That’s what was done in this study
-
Nice work, Kevin. Although having taken up the battle, I suspect you'll spend the rest of your career driving the stake through the 24-h recall's heart.
