Dear white friends, If you're struggling to understand how we got to this point, please don't ask the black people in your lives to educate you. On the best of days, it's not okay to expect them to expend their energy, their emotional labor teaching you things you can research.

Message bank I'm not certain whether this is an /answering service/ (a company that uses real humans to answer the phone and take your messages; used by a lot of businesses) or /voicemail/ (where callers leave a recorded voice message and the phone owner can listen to it later).

It simply doesn't cross his mind that the individual woman he's speaking to, who shares his interest, could have as much knowledge as he does. So the mansplainer gives his unsolicited explanation without checking whether she has her own knowledge or can add to the conversation.

People really on this bird app insisting it can't be mansplaining if the guy is referencing a woman's work. The term literally comes from a man explaining Rebecca Solnit's book to her. A mansplainer doesn't necessarily hate women... 1/2

This graph is comparing how much wealth different generations had at the same median age. It's says that at age 35, Boomers had twice the share of wealth as Gen X at 35, who have twice what Millennials have at 35. And at 45, Boomers have almost 3x what Gen X have at 45.

AVO Just came across this and had to look it up: Apprehended Violence Order. With those initials, that particular order isn't found in the U.S. Even if I'm wrong and it exists in some jurisdiction, pretty much everyone is just going to call it a restraining order.

Pissed Though many Americans will probably understand if you use this to mean drunk, it's not what most would say. For us, if we're pissed, we're angry. Instead, we might be drunk, wasted, hammered, plastered, wrecked, smashed... Also buzzed & tipsy, which are less than drunk.

Shout (buying drinks) Most Americans won't know what this means. "Shout" referencing buying a round (or buying anything) isn't something we say. Yes: "I've got the next round." Yes: "It's your round." No: "It's my shout."

Fancy-dress party We don't use this phrase and many Americans will picture formal wear, not costumes. We say costume parties.

First floor This is the floor at ground level. We also say ground floor, but it's still the first floor. Going up one level takes us to the second floor.

Notes =/= money If we pass a server a note, it's probably a scribbled message on a napkin or receipt. To pay cash, we might pass them a couple of bills, some cash, a twenty (or a fiver, tenner, or ten-spot), but not notes.

Language tips for other English speakers Americans. 🧵 Language differences are fun, but can pull a reader out of the story. Each of these are things I've come across British or Australian authors using when they've set their stories in the U.S.

If you are a BIPOC aspiring TV writer, my DMs are open and I’d love to read your script (TV pilots only, no sci-fi/fantasy please). I’m an Emmy nominated upper-level writer who’s worked in both half-hour and hourlong.
