  I got the audiobook of the last one, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The Gears of war franchise has also been releasing books that flesh out the story, and I'm a big fan.

  I think it’s super cool that they have the books to give a deeper insight into the characters and their motivations. However, I think the events need to be portrayed in game some how, a simple quest line or something.

  It's a fair criticism. I have the same issue when Halo does it too... Makes me feel like idk what's going on when I play Halo 4 and 5 meanwhile I grew up playing the first 3
