After last session, where the TX GOP refused to listen to police chiefs across the state who said the rollback rate would affect their ability to fund departments, we now have GOP leadership once again overriding local control when it is politically convenient. #txlege

If Austin voters don’t like what their city council is doing, then they have the opportunity to vote them out. This is a government of elected representatives. They answer to their constituents every four years.

This move to freeze property tax revenue for cities “defunding” their police departments deflects from what should be our real priority of listening to the cries of our communities and taking seriously the agenda around police reform.

I applaud FWPD for the work they do. I applaud Chief Krause for plans to use CCPD funding to improve community relations, use of crisis intervention teams & belief that every call doesn’t require an officer. No one knows the needs of their city like locally elected officials. 4/

Anyone saying the House will support this proposal is laughable. Especially if that member is not returning to the Legislature due to nefarious, backroom dealings against members of their own party.

We're in the middle of a pandemic the likes of which the world hasn’t seen in 100 years. Over 10,000 Texans are dead. Local & statewide budgets will be greatly affected. Are cities allowed to reduce funding to departments to make ends meet? How do we define “defund?”

I’m left with more questions than answers, and all I can say is it was a political stunt pulled in my District. For anyone wondering, I was not invited. This was a partisan pep rally against movements across the country to deal with our broken criminal justice system.
