    Today marks the 116th Anniversary of the 1906 Great San Francisco Earthquake - one of the most significant of all time. Reportedly felt from southern Oregon to Los Angeles and inland as far as central Nevada.

    A date which will live in infamy. The fact that the 1906 earthquake was recorded on seismometers tells us that seismology existed before 1906. More fair to say the field of seismology came of age with this portentous event.

    One of just a handful of cities that have experienced basically their worst case scenario earthquake in modern history. Each year brings us closer to the next one, but WOW we've learned pretty much all of earthquake science since this last one.

    i mean IPCC's report literally says in order to meet climate goals, we need to immediately de-prioritize private vehicles - while prioritizing blue-green infra and multifamily housing and compact, mixed use districts/cities that are walkable - w/ transit & bike access 👋

    If anyone's looking for a good synopsis of forensic investigations into what really happened, structurally, in the quake and the fire, this book by UCB engineer Stephen Tobriner is a fascinating read:

    Strictly speaking, the consequent *fire* destroyed much of SF, the quake having left a milder smattering of collapses & damaged ground. But if ur system is not set up to handle cascading effects like fire, then the triggering event induces a disaster. Quake was rough; fire razed.

    The April 18, 1906 earthquake destroyed much of San Francisco, caused a worldwide financial crisis, and led to the rapid growth of Los Angeles. The Lawson (1908) report on it is still regularly cited 116 years later. How's that for a citation index?
