    Another interesting experiment. When a positron (antimatter electron) annihilates, it releases 2 gamma rays. Typically these come out 180 degrees from each other. Here I've got 2 gamma probes 30cm apart, with some K40 in the middle. This sharp spike should be those 511kev gammas

    I now have 2 functional gamma ray detectors so I've got them set up to do coincidence detection, aka the program only triggers if something sets off both detectors at the same time. I've got them stacked on top of each other aimed at the sky. The big peak (right) is ~1000 muons!

    On a whim I decided to have a piece of DNA made. It expresses a blue chromoprotein in mammalian cells. Partly this is to test the food safety of the protein for later experiments, but also it'll just be a cool reporter plasmid I can add to addgenes repository. this is the color:

    Managed to finally transform some bacteria with a plasmid that makes them bioluminescent. Last one I needed for the video and now I can stock up on the DNA so I don't run out again. I love this color! Maybe I'll grow a flasks worth just for fun

    The entire inside of the kiln is covered in a layer of ruby. I should've waited for it to cool more, this only shows the largest bits but the entire inner surface now glows pink. Now to get it to grow in one spot rather than coating everything...

    We melted a fire brick. Well, we melted several but this one turned into a puddle. These are rated to ~2000C. We also made a pile of ruby before running out of oxygen. Thursday we should be able to make some massive chunks of ruby

    Ironically, these quack BS negative ion bracelets are so consistent in the radiation they put out, I've taken to using them as my check source for calibrating my gamma spectrometer. And they're safe to handle since the thorium is contained in plastic

    Decided to order a bunch of fun new plasmids. Gonna get the b-carotene one I mentioned yesterday, one that converts b-carotene into astaxanthin, a purple and a blue chromoprotein, and one that make the bacteria change color when exposed to light. SO excited!!
