While I don’t disagree with you completely, metabolisms do make a difference over time. Like say your body can handle an extra 50 calories a day, over the course of a month that means you could have 15 12oz cans of soda. Someone unlucky gains a pound that month if they drink that

that's assuming if they always eat at their BMR which is just an estimate at the end of the day. I doubt most people even keep track of all their calorie intake in general so that 50 calories doesn't mean a lot when 15 mins of walking you burn as much
