I think the funniest thing about the talent vs hard work debate is how little people have read and looked into the subject, yet they're 100% certain one way. Biggest misconception imo is that the only thing people think is "talent" is learning things quickly in the beginning.

Very often, good results in the beginning (without very hard work) mean: 1. The person is focused on winning short term, abusing one or two strategies only and not learning things fully or thoroughly. 2. The person does not learn how to value hard work, and what habits you need .

although talent is not whats stopping 99,9% people in esports, many who get to a high level in less competitive scenes often get there intitally because of "luck"- they simply mindlessly played the game a lot and then happened to get good, rather than deliberately practicing.

Luck is a huge factor for any successful person in any field Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell is a good book that discusses this :) And that dumb 10,000 hours rule to be successful thing

Outliers is pretty terrible tbh, the main thing people take away from it (10000 hours to acheive mastery) is just utterly wrong. There is a ton of people who have worked at a job for 20000 hours who are utter shit at it because they don't put any thought into it.

Even the author himself has backpeddled on the subject iirc. The rest of the book is more or less just intresting anecdotes about celebrities and then saying the rest outside of 10000hrs is down to luck, which isn't a very nuanced or accurate way to look at it.

I'd recommend "top dog, the science of winning and losing" for a book more thorough and is based on actual scientific research if you want more information on a subject!

Out of curiosity, how much reading on the subject have you done? A lot of top player hard work is "visible" (eg grinding and analysis) but people don't talk as much about how much "invisible" prep they do

I've read a couple of books on the subject (many need a reread) and watched many podcasts/videos about learning as a subject (many of these are "book recaps" more or less). Also talked to some specialists and other pros through my career, and obv watched sports docs
