It depends. I think mentality plays a huge role, so if playing less accomplishes better mentality and more focuses training sessions, it might be better. Ult isn't as execution heavy as some esports so you get less out of mass grind in theory. Just IMHO

Kind of hard to deliberately practice matchups without training partners for each, unless you just quickplay/arena and pray for MU RNG, hence "focused training sessions", but I get where you're coming from
There’s a lot you can do outside of literally playing someone in the matchup. You can study vods of the char/mu, you can lab punishes, you can theorycraft with others over discord or whatever. There’s plenty of ways to practice or improve without simply playing someone.
