I feel like there's so many low/mid level players in FGs that don't think cheese/gimmicks exist because "if it works its good" lmao. Its both baffling and sadly the most common pitfall keeping people from ever becoming good at a fighting game.

It migh be gimmick, but until it stops working ... It's a gameplan. I'm not laying off this fine ass cheese until the opponent shows me I need to.

I'm not saying never use them, but far too many base their playstyle around beating low level players who don't know any MU when you should be beating those with basic fundamentals anyway

The problem is, every time, every match that you win through gimmicks, is a match where you didn't improve your fundamentals. Over time it adds up QUICK. That's not to say gimmicks have no use, but they should never be a big part of your gameplay or a gameplan

Oh I agree, if you win with gimmicks, you need to be conscious of what you're doing and how it can be beaten. But good gimmicks are usually good because they revolve around good tools, that you will want to use. As long as you know why it works, you can learn from gimmicks too.

For example, T7 Lars has a LOT of cheap shit that will stop working as soon as the opponent can react to visual cues. But those gimmick options revolve around good moves that are also essential to Lars' neutral, and overall gameplan. It's just turned up to 11 and becomes dumb.

There are strong and weak gimmicks, but it doesn't necessarily change that you're focusing too hard on winning now instead of long term.

I might very well be. Imo there is still value in using gimmicks, and understanding why they work, to learn how your characters options work together. I.E, this H H H string works, because you have access to the H M variant too.

I get why only playing around these is bad, defintely, but I feel like you're dismissing the value in these kinds of options, both for learning how some characters can work, and how they can mix their opponents up, a bit too quickly. (mostly talking about Tekken "cheese" btw)

Then the stance isn't really a gimmick, but those options are - but obviously you can check them with it every now and then. And yeah, Tekken cheese is far stronger than in most games because of the amount of moves and how hard they are to tell apart
