Jumping takes extra frames and its already a slow move. and moving backwards makes you worse ay covering other recovery methods. Of course sometimes there's a way to cover all but even when there's not you shouldn't be spiked and die at 0 midstage.
If you actually look at the clip you'll see that he was already fulljumping. He literally could not have sh watergunned in time and dj watergun wouldn't hit.

Yes, you lose access to your ability to cover other options by committing to your slow riskless option in an attempt to use an option that kills Chrom at 0. The risk reward is still very very skewed towards Squirtle in this interaction.

ALSO, on the spacing Rivers did the up b at it didn’t need to hit below ledge. A half stage water gun would’ve killed him there. When Chrom does the up b at the height that you need to hit below the ledge on, IT NEVER SUCKS YOU OFFSTAGE AND SPIKES.
