And having designs such as puff/little mac/bowser/bayo/hero where the core design isn't really fit to be competitive in the same game as wolf means that the game plays really wonky and there's less time to make chars actually work (see multi hits)

you're not at all wrong for wanting something along the lines of Melee, where there's fewer characters to focus on, but this DOES sound like a preference thing. I'm sure there's an entire group of people for example that love the more open ended gimmicks and techs.

Wouldn't that be the case since the game soon will have 80+ characters? I guess in that sense, since there are so many characters with unique abilities gimmicks, it must a nightmare to learn each matchup in and out if you play competitively.
