No, you wear it so you don’t get the others sick in public spaces (or if you don’t want to get sick). If you go to the drugstore in Japan they have some improved breathable face masks that are more pricy. Japanese doesn’t wear them for fun :)

There are plenty of Japanese people who wear masks in public when they are not sick. I have heard it described in person as giving a "comfortable/secure" feeling, and described online as giving a similar sense of "don't talk to me" detachment as walking around with headphones on.
