i absolutely agree it's money left on the table, but it's Nintendo lol they've been known to make decisions that seem weird and backwards from the outside, it's usually in defense of their brand

Other game devs have much better monetization schemes. Viewers go on to buy skins, card packs, in-game items, DLC, etc. and its way easier for them to print money doing so. How does Nintendo monetize Melee? They can't even sell the game itself anymore.

Ultimate does have this kind of stuff. So if they were to support the scene directly, it makes sense for them to do it with Ultimate.

the only reason other companies dump millions of dollars into their esports is to artificially grow the scene or profit off of it. Smash's self-made scene has achieved insane viewership on its own so there is no reason for Nintendo to fund the scene other than to be cool.
