Honestly top players should unionize but it won't realistically happen. If TOs aren't willing to work with top players you will see more people attend less and less as soon as their stream/twitter grows big enough. With how awful schedules and payouts are - who can blame them?
Even commentators get paid more than most of top 8 and often gets flights covered to majors. That's not to say that commentators should be paid less but far less people attend/watch an event because a commentator is there than top players attending.
IDK about that man, there are plenty of people who will 100% have their experience killed by lack of a good commentator, the scene grows because of both the rise of players and stories and the rise of the great commentators that tell these stories to the people as they happen.
Of course, but when was the last time you saw a tournament saying "TBH9 FT. EE and Coney as commentators" vs TBH9 Ft. top players? At that point people have already clicked and are invested but of course good commentary is big.
From a former ‘pro’ player turned commentator, the point most overlook is that commentating is and should be treated as a Job. Its work and sometimes not fun. Top players who can make top 8 should be sponsored with salary/travel covered - prize money is their bonus at that point.
Keep in mind that commentators make a laughable amount of money, both at the top, mid and bottom, in comparison to most games. Its a joke how little it is.
Good commentary potentially makes the scene look more professional and may bring in sponsors. So theyre necessary. But it just feels wrong some get paid better than some top players out there.
Why? Good commentators put in lots of work to get where they are at and are very marketable personalities.
Is there any way to see the financials of some these tournaments? If they’re going to try and justify what their payouts are then they should have no problem showing us their numbers.
The vast, vast majority of tournaments separate prize pools from the rest of their finances - $10 from each entrant is put directly into the prize pool, and that never goes anywhere else. Pot bonuses are just that - bonuses, and certainly not the norm.
Players are quite literally the product, and the fact that the prize pool comes solely from entry fees basically means the players themselves are funding the expense which everything is centered on.
I dunno, @jchensor, @ultradavid @Tasty_Steve, @IFCYipeS & a few others are the difference between a snoozable stream and a hype one...
