saddest thing about ult is how insanely huge of an advantage playing smash 4 / brawl is imo scene is so stale in terms of new players from other scenes

the interest was huge from FGC and other scenes in the beginning but I don't blame other people for quitting or not getting any results yet. Smash 4 had 58 of the chars in this and most mechanics introduced in Ult are just secondary to the mechanics used in brawl/4

I mean the same can be said of most sequels though, no? SF4 -> SFV, Tekken 6 -> 7, etc carry over a lot even if the mechanics aren't identical. But I do agree with you. DBFZ season 1 was an even playing field and that made it so hype.
