Guys the better you get at ANY fighting game the more you will realize commitment to ANY option that is punishible (read as 99% of options) is worse than trying to bait your opponent to a commitment and punishing them. That's high level and it's defensive in nature.

Non troll response though, you are a higher level player than me so I say this with that in mind, I think we have different definitions of what defensive is. Yours may be more accurate but I define anything that is done with taking the least risk possible as defensive.

Defensive is not the same as low risk to begin with, but if you actually look at fighting game matches objectively you see people take high risk high reward reads all the time.Obviously not a high risk low reward option for no reason all the time but thats just knowing whats bad

Right which I can see how you would disagree with my definition with that thought process, I would make the point for you to consider that the information to get hard reads from an opponent usually comes from the defensive part of low risk/ defensive neutral early on in sets.

And that being with equally skilled opponents not a top player just crushing low level players with hard reads cuz that's totally different lol.

thats one strategy to use, to play safe until you get specific reads. Other playstyles are to use high impact high risk moves early to make your opponent play "your game" and set the pace of the match. If your opp knows you are going to play low risk (not dp on wakeup) then

suddenly the meta shifts the other direction - he wont do a high risk punishable thing early so I have free pressure, and then later I can bait out the dp when he thinks I will keep doing it. Everything in fighting games sucks if you know your opponent is going to do it

The time where you use low risk medium reward to get reads on your opponent is generally when you're playing a pretty good player thats still beneath you, essentially scrub busting. But everyone good knows how to play vs that and so it has a massive weakness in that.

that doesn't mean defensive play sucks, that all depends on the game. The real skill is that truly great players can adapt and change their playstyles for the game and matchup, or even for a specific player playstyle.

While I have your ear I want to ask, when playing lower level players do you feel you out think them or you out play them within the physics of the game more often? I'm talking like someone one or 2 steps below your level.

depends on the game and matchup and player! some people have good tech skill but are stupid and some are the opposite
