I personally love swiss waterfall and round robin type for tournaments, as long as it doesn't screw over top competitors really hard. Fun to see SNS experiment!

I still think floating for top players makes a lot of sense for melee (NOT ULTIMATE or any game with frequent upsets). I know I'll get hate for this opinion but I 100% think itd make it better for everyone, with top players able to do signings/commentary day 1 and attend more.

the basically do floating in cod, they have 16 teams in 4 pools and then an open bracket where the top 4 teams make it to pool play. Means there is actual competition from day 1 and you dont have to watch burgers play

it is like this for most esports. it is better for worse players, pro players and viewers, but smashers love their purist grass roots format, it is almost like a religion

IMO it's more about players not wanting to be at an unfair advantage when they run into a floated player. It's not easy to play melee all day or at 10am day 1 so floating seems like a huge advantage in terms of fatigue. This doesnt apply to Summit since it's an invitational.

It does apply to summit lol, campagining and attending qualifiers is way more exhauasting than r1 pools lmao, and u wouldnt play floated players same day as pools anyway.

I do think you'll need pretty strict rules for floating tho - like it can't be a thing just based on someones name. It's gotta be based on recent results only I think

Related/unrelated question: How do you feel about more big events being invitational-based for top players, while lower level players have to compete in a separate bracket to make it in? Like an amateur bracket.

I ask because this seems to be where some people from big esports want Smash/FGC to go, and it's a more extreme example of separating the pros from the amateurs so the pros can fulfill more esports duties.
