It really does depend, I don't think they're that culturally different from us in that regard. I will say that I went to top players' smashfests all the time when I lived in Japan in 2010 and I was a 100% random scrub. Both for Melee and Brawl (I went to 9B, Ranai etc houses)
i think 2010 was very different regardless, but yes its definitely not black and white in any direction - thats was kinda the point. Tons of FGC players talk about japan as if its this perfect country where they all share everything and ganbatte all day.

Community wise, it is true that top ppl practice some exclusivity with get togethers, but that is USUALLY amongst a backdrop of open offline events/arcades & community building events on a regular basis (varying levels based on community). I agree weabs do misunderstand JP tho

Here's what is true though... Japan is smaller than America so if you wanted top tier practice it'd be easier to come travel wise than the US.
