Basing the entire character diversity of a game on one tournament's top 8 doesn't seem like that's it chief.

I think at Genesis there were 7 different characters in Melee Top 8... When Armada played there were definitely more Top 8's like that. Pound isn't an outlier. lol

Melees Top 8 for Majors has actually been getting more diverse, I could note Genesis6 as a good example.

falco vs puff, shiek vs marth winners side, losers side you got ice climbers vs falcon and then pikachu vs fox, don't even get me started on ultimate's top 8 xD

I haven't been following this tournament, but from what you said, it seems that all of Melee's top 8 is made up of different characters. Is Ultimate's Top 8 diverse? I wouldn't know.
