Smash is 5th in esports viewership (behind LoL, CS, Dota, & OW) Arguably 1st in live attendance (smaller peaks but much more overall) Probably top 3 in social engagement and Dead last in prizing Dead last in sponsorships Dead last in media rights lmaooooo
the amount that the top 20-30 players get considering their value is honestly laughable same with 99% of TOs the only ones raking in cash from this is Nintendo lmfao

and even then nintendo is getting like 5% of the cash they could be getting they are literally holding back the entire scene and so many careers at this point japanese companies + esports :(

The amount of times I've explained to people I'd be set for life if I had played any of the other top games and was as good as I was...
Honestly one of the reasons i got super jaded about smash stuff and had to go into hiding

Gears of war is small grassroots that made it into mlg circuit with proper coordination from the devs and the community. 2 years in a row now they’ve had 2million dollar circuits. Viewership peaks around 20K and attendance is very small...blows my mind smash doesn’t have this.

What could be done to rectify this? Should tourney stream over a certain viewership threshold share ad revenue with top 8 finishers? YouTube ad revenues split (even if just 1%) with the players? Just thinking out loud here, some solution must be possible.

So much of the money that goes into esports is marketing and branding. I think the issue here is that the big companies have nearly nothing to gain from branding themselves with the smash audience. How are you going to sell a 1500$ Rig to a kid playing on a glorified tablet?
