I think melee awards punish game and neutral far more than any defensive option like DI etc.
Its just more natural for players to have good offense because its more fun, and so defense is usually added later and seems like the defining difference between a mid-top playe.

I actually think it’s true in Melee too. I’d say about 70% of nuetral is tempting the opponent to attack in an unsafe way. That tempting and exploiting their unthoughtful attack would be considered defensive, at least in my book. Definitely not aggressive.

That’s mostly just mid level chump checkers though. Granted you can become a top player through chump checking but they all get exposed against people who know how to approach
