I've spent all weekend thinking about the "masks don't interfere with conversations" people.

Like I wanted to argue with them last week. But I'm glad I didn't try. There's not much to say.

...Yes, smug cartoons mocking people who don't trust experts are THE SCIENCE. You got it.

It's one of those "crazy pills" moments, listening to that stuff.

As someone who works directly with the public I can confirm this is a wrong take.

I was confused by this tweet, but then I remembered I'm constitutionally incapable of whispering. My wife might make me wear a mask all the time.

I have it on good authority that those with hearing deficits find it hard to understand speech without being able to see the lips of the speaker.

Wait, people think they do? I can see it for a few small groups, like the hearing-impaired who need to read lips, but for most people it's not a huge deal. I'll be happy to get the stupid things off, but not for that reason.

I find it more noticeably more difficult, possibly due to audio processing or attention. Americans are notoriously very smiley, for what it's worth, and vis-a-vis East Asia, we key in more on the mouth than the eyes for emotional cues.

I have tinnitus which can drown out the low end of the audio spectrum. It’s difficult for me at times to understand what people are saying and it’s exacerbated by masks.

Tim, maybe you should just accept that you’re powerless over other people wearing masks?
