We obviously shouldn't pack everyone we can fit back into churches. But if we can allow 20% of the ordinary max occupancy at Home Depot, why can't we allow that at a church service (that also has no-touching, no-symptomatic-people rules)?https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/roll-back-the-stone-its-time-to-let-people-back-into-church …

How do you choose which 20% attend?

        1) As I say, that's a headache. 2) Have 5 times as many services. 3) Get creative, do online signups/lotteries/alphabetical order. 4) Let every congregation experiment, and a few will come up with great ideas that others will follow.

        Who will enforce it though?

The people themselves. We are seeing it for the most part. No cop enforces the line at the supermarket . And that’s how it’s supposed to work. Give folks credit to be able to make decisions regarding themselves and their elderly relatives. You’ll find it’s already happening.

Home Depots started with people much farther apart than churches, have better ventilation, and don't encourage people to spend most of their time there talking, which increases the risk of infection. I miss mass too, but this is not safe, particularly for smaller churches

Catholic churches might be relatively safe, since Catholics like to mumble, but the protestant tradition in many denominations is to bellow out hymns--something we *know* infected a choir despite seating themselves well distanced. And authorities cannot discriminate between sects

Our church has lots of elderly and we've been having services by Zoom. Temporary risk mitigation strategy. Why risk it?

Under your plan, would you allow law enforcement to break up religious gatherings that violate the guidelines? Or would this be all under the honor system?

I think long-term this would be counterproductive for religious freedom. If you think people are unsympathetic now, wait until places of worship become the epicentres or outbreak clusters. Freedom of conscience and assembly will be seen to quite literally be endangering others.
