Approval voting would end that effect. If voters can mark all the candidates they're okay with, there's incentive for candidates to moderate instead of to radicalize. 51% no longer guarantees victory because someone else might get 60%.
Gerrymandered districts increase the likelihood that elected officials will represent communities for which they have no real connection and can't credibly speak for.
