#OurCityOurVote a.k.a. Local Law 11-2022 is worth fighting for and that’s exactly what we will do. Our coalition partners and allies will not rest until the law is implemented and justice is restored. Let’s go!

My heart is heavy with sadness after hearing about the massacre in #MontereyPark during Lunar New Year celebrations and my thoughts are with the AAPI community there. Hoping they catch the perpetrator soon.

As we head into the new year, we have a new opportunity to address the urgent safety issues facing basement apartment tenants and homeowners in NYC. We urge @GovKathyHochul, @NYSenate and @NYSA_Majority to make 2023 the year NY acts on basement apartment safety. Our statement:
A New Year’s Resolution for Albany: Take Action on Basement Apartment Safety

This year, low-income tenants and homeowners in NYC saw tremendous challenges & momentum towards policy solutions, including Gov Hochul’s recent statements that housing will be a focus of her 2023 agenda. For the NYers who call basement apts home, the new year brings a new opportunity for Albany to take action to ensure this housing is safe, dignified, and affordable.

Following the deadly floods of Hurricane Ida, BASE supported legislation that would allow New York City to create a program to make basement apartments safe. The bill disappointingly did not move forward last session, but we are encouraged to see the Adams & Hochul admins expressing support for basement apartment legalization. We’ve long awaited city and state lawmakers coming together to create a solution. Let 2023 be the year that NY makes serious progress on housing and climate justice & the first year it takes action on basement safety.

Our country has a choice in front of us: cruelty or welcome. When you #ChooseWelcome, you voice your support for a community-led system that reflects our true values as a country. You show politicians there are more people who stand on the side of welcome than cruelty. (3/4)

DeSantis and Abbott’s reelections further embolden them to play their political games with immigrants’ lives. We’ve seen this all before. We know that when politicians use immigrant children and families as political props, real people get hurt. (2/4)
