In the words of former #NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton, Mr. Gurley was a “total innocent.” However, even though a jury convicted Liang of manslaughter and official misconduct, a judge reduced his charge and sentenced him to probation and community service.
Although Liang was fired, as @Sifill_LDF said at the time, “Liang’s sentence sends a deeply troubling message that police officers convicted of killing unarmed African Americans will be held to a different, and more lenient, standard of justice than everyone else.”
