The answer is no, a child cannot get off the bus any place he wants to. If he wants to get off of the bus at a different place than their normal stop they have to have permission from their parent, which makes perfect sense; otherwise, we'd be chasing our kids all over creation.

Kids can’t get off at any stop. Safety. Couldn’t even in my day in a small town and I’m 63.

You will love this though. My uncle during WWII rations would run down hill after school, buy that days ration of ammunition, run back up to get on bus to ride home to the farm. My grandparents basically lived off the land. Ammunition was critical to food.
