If the electoral college goes there is literally no purpose in keeping the United States united. There is no reason for Texas et al to be dictated to by the coastal states.

It may be time to change the E.C. to proportional instead of winner-take-all. Or each candidate wins the vote based on the popular vote of Congressional districts and the 2 votes from each state based on the Senate.

One weakness of the EC, if you can call it that, is that it defers to the states for selection of the electors, specifying only how many. Its implied that their republican forms of govt uses election by the people, but winner-take-all at state level is customary, not required.

The reps from 13 states who met in the Spring-Summer of 1787 debated long and hard about small vs large states in the future federal govt. The Electoral College was incl primarily to deal w/ results split among many parties, but also to give a special advantage to small states.

Not a "special" advantage!!! It is a concept called parity. Or, even more to the point, FAIRNESS. I don't want NY and CA telling me who my president is going to be, and if we abandon the EC, that's exactly what's going to happen.

Gov. Mike Huckabee explained on his program how the EC came about. Made perfect sense. The most populated states should NOT decide for all of America who is to be our leader. All states should be equally represented during election.
