How can a simple question asking if you are a citizen be controversial?? Either you are a citizen or you are not! I understand how many states would be worried because it all comes down to funding & seats.

Yes, census must be allowed to determine how many US citizens are in the Country. Illegal Aliens are still subject to the laws of the United States and therefore are Subjects, not citizens. Subjects have no vote and must be accounted for as such.
