To help clarify with some of the questions we're seeing in our mentions: Trans men & non-binary people can get pregnant. The proposed legislation does not include them. Legislation will obvs. overwhelmingly affect women & girls, but trans inclusion doesn't take away their rights!
Conversation
Irish gender recognition legislation recognises men and women based on their own self determination. Hopefully non-binary people will also be recognised soon. No need for any other 'umbrellas' - that would get confusing.

Not at all! Thanks for your support and speaking out. This is mild, tbh. We got this thing repealed and now we just need a few small tweaks to the legislation. 'Tis a great werkend altogether!

Would simply changing “pregnant woman” to “pregnant person” or “the person who is pregnant” in each instance be acceptable?
The language in the 1967 UK abortion act is not inclusive, but is interpreted as such in practice.
Even if language wasn’t inclusive, practice might be.

Hmm - yes - the legislation should definitely say pregnant person - Must remember to ping that to the various TDs before they finish proposals....

Is it because the language is gendered? Can they not use pregnant person instead of woman in it, and can we lobby out TDs to make sure that happens?

What needs to be done? Write to TDs and lobby for "pregnant person" rather than gendered language? X

AIMSI supports inclusive language. Our chosen language is usually “women, girls, and pregnant people”. Sometimes “others” or “individuals”. Very open to preferences - language should be representative of those personally affected. Keep up the great work!
