In the US, people frequently believe crime is getting worse despite crime dropping dramatically Why wouldn't already paranoid store owners feel the same way? Business people are frequently just straight up wrong about things Or maybe it's the fear of mass shootings?

Because store owners have direct access to the correct information. Walgreens isn't closing stores because they're paranoid.

Here's a rule: if you really want police protection, you report crimes. If it's something you just shrug off, you don't. Fact is, apples to apples, shoplifting complaints have steadily declined for years. It's the surgies burden to show exactly why that data is wrong and 1/

So it looks like most of those stores announced they would close well before the "surge". It sounds very much like a local problem, too, one exacerbated by social issues like homelessness and substance abuse (both can be better managed with non-cop programs)

It sounds like the cops were never really meaningfully defunded either A 3% cut to funding and they act like it's the killing blow and not just a reason to cut back a very little on the unnecessary overtime or wasteful spending
