[thread] It can often seem on here that everyone is doing better than you and publishing a million papers. In the next few weeks it's going to seem like I'm doing that, so here's the reality to make you feel better...

Hey fellow nature nerds: if you’re at a zoo or aquarium or museum or what-have-you, is it obnoxious to (politely, nicely) chime in if someone is being thoroughly incorrect about what they’re looking at? Or better to just mind my own business?

In response to the whole “women get fewer followers” situation, here’s a thread of women I think everyone should be following. #1 She’s funny as hell, loves birds, is a passionate science communicator &speaks against racism, pointing out the bullshit she sees.

Along similar lines, our institution requires gender balance for tenure letter writers. I understand the motivation but it’s a thankless (anonymous) job and women are a small fraction of tenured faculty so they will get hit up disproportionately.

The life of a male swordtail is fairly simple: eat, display to females, mate if you’re lucky, display to competing males, eat again, repeat. Hybrid swordtails (Xiphophorus malinche x Xiphophorus birchmanni) of early but unknown in the lab

Just going over comments from the only soil scientist on my committee-and I feel so out of depth. She still likes the work and thinks its valuable-but I want to just dig pits everywhere and describe all the dirt in the world. Why can't you do/be everything in grad school?
