I had the same issue with Google play, so I just downloaded the Castbox client instead and haven't had that problem again.
At the time I just assumed everyone was so busy with Blizzcon that they didn't put out an episode

My iOS Apple Podcast app randomly decided the other week that I hadn’t listened to dozens of episodes and redownloaded them all, had to manually get rid of them. I just assumed it was an Apple bug.
