  1. "We focus on what works and it releases our creative energy, we focus on what is wrong people become depressed and disengaged… Ask what is possible here and who cares, when we ask those questions what we are actually doing is releasing our innate human creativity” - M. Wheatley

  2. A key consideration in system structural change, is the set of incentives that attract us - as human beings - to perpetuate hierarchical systems that we know are exclusionary and inhibit needed changes. It is the structure of centralized systems that needs our consideration.

  3. "I think leadership is about how we create, how generative is an enterprise, that is a really good indicator of the quality of leadership" - Peter Senge

  4. "People only own what they create, so if you don't include them in the front end of creation of anything, they will take whatever you give them and recreate it in ways that you don't like."

  5. "Most organizations because of the machine based thinking that goes into them have created profound fragmentation, when we talk about us as an organization it's actually not a true statement to say us or we it's mostly that there are different departments"

Understanding a system by understanding the constraints upon it is a hugely valuable perspective in figuring out why it is the way it is and does what it does. This is one of the benefits of the engineer and design perspective, as they have to recognize and work with constraints

Given advancements in data and algorithms it would seem that within a couple of decades the only job for managers would be in the space of enabling transformational change, but are there any business schools even teaching nonlinear change processes?

"What I see happening is that when you try and control chaos from the top, or from your own persona as a leader, all you do is create more chaos and you disempower and dis affect the very people you need to get through a crisis" - Meg Wheatley

"Leadership is not a few smart people telling everyone else what to do leadership helps everyone think together, build together, change together... now our whole society has to be organized that way and it is a fundamentally different type of leadership"

"Instead of developing them [social entrepreneurs] individually as leaders..we would do better to connect them to like-minded others and create the conditions for emergence. The skills and capacities needed by them will be found in the system that emerges"

"Emergent phenomena always have these characteristics: They exert much more power than the sum of their parts; they always possess new capacities different from the local actions that engendered them; they always surprise us by their appearance"

"The world doesn't change one person at a time it changes as networks of relationships form among people who discover they share a common cause and vision of what's possible..Rather than worry about critical mass our work is to foster critical connections"

"Researchers and social activists are beginning to discover the power of networks and networking. And there is a growing recognition that networks are the new form of organizing." Great article on emergence for scaling social innovation, Wheatley & Frieze

Yes, but not sure about No. 5 and 6, those conceptions of scaling are a bit limited, maybe better think in terms of networks, this article explains how to scale social innovation through emergence

In times of deep transformation, what matters are motivations - without the right motives you can't transform because you have nothing to transform to. For this systems change should be a lot about finding those communities with the right motives and working to grow them.
