This tweet is gaining momentum, so I should give credit to @kellecruz for the graph in the photo. I snapped it during her great public talk this afternoon at the Simons Foundation on open source software in science (particularly astronomy).

Did you know that there are more than three projects in the open science software infrastructure?
-
Maybe “we” is scoped smaller than “the science community”
-
Even then, this chart shows 1800+ contributors and 200+ person years of effort.
-
Without context, it's difficult to comment. One interpretation is that this slide is not a celebration of "the hero" as much as a call to action to get more folks signed up as maintainers. That would be healthy, no?
-
I'm struggling to find the way to look at a pyramid that goes down from 1000+ contributors, to 200+ person years, to 15 people; followed by the claim that we "rely on" those 15, that isn't damaging to the overall contributor ecosystem.
-
i agree with
@mjgiarlo that this was probably trying to encourage participation, but i think this sends a toxic message that only the current maintainers are worthy or important -
Since I was at the talk I hope you'll believe me when I say that this was NOT to say that only maintainers are important. It just highlights that our bus factor may be an issue, especially if very few contributors were willing to take become maintainers in the future.
-
Thanks for sharing that!

Yup, I'm using Pandas example in all my talks about OSS.
-
Seriously? That slide really surprised me. At every company I've worked for (large insurance companies) that used Numpy, Scipy, Pandas, not one would donate a dime to any of them. But then they pay for a 10K / year for a C++ matrix lib license. Something;s very wrong.
-
Companies have processes for buying things. They have no processes for giving away

-
Companies don't pay for things they don't have to.
-
Actually it's not even possible. You cannot "donate" to individuals or an org that is not recognized by the state. That's really a problem if you're in a big org and WOULD like to support...
-
I thought I've had recently is that
@NumFocus should make PDF documentation available for "purchase" at a selectable price. Then I can purchase the documentation and bill it to the clients whose projects I'm working on.

Love it. Also semi-related, there's a growing movement for Research Software Engineers to be more recognised in academia. Stuff like this shows why it's important imo.http://rse.ac.uk/
