There is no such thing as a "trans kid." There are just boys and girls, and they deserve to grow up healthy and whole and without being indoctrinated to believe in harmful biological pseudoscience.

They did this when I worked at Bayer helping develop biologic pesticides, but they called it "encouraged evolution." Same principle though. Thing is, these "evolutionary" methods are actually more dangerous because it mutates the entire genome and is therefore less predictable.

This "directed evolution" method of creating mutants, as opposed to direct genetic modification, is not done because it's less dangerous. It's done because it's less LEGALLY dangerous, has fewer regulations to abide by, and has less social stigma associated with it. That's all.

1/ 🧵When I worked at Bayer, they got around regulations on "genetically modified" pesticide biologics by performing so-called "encouraged evolution" to achieve a desired mutation. Similar to how Pfizer is performing "directed evolution" to avoid calling it "gain of function."

There's this idea that maybe there's something real there and one must reconcile and come to terms with it. You have to study it closely for a while in good faith to realize: Actually, it's all fake.

4/ This was always fully acknowledged within the company. Meanwhile the Left-wing protesters went and protested Monsanto down the street because they were producing evil "genetically modified" plants and pesticides, while we were spared because we did "encouraged evolution."

2/ But these "encouraged" or "directed" "evolution" methods are actually more dangerous than straightforward genetic modification, because the mutations are not precisely targeted. They mutate the ENTIRE genomes with mutagens and what they produce is much more unpredictable.

In 2013, a group of clinicians that included M. Hidalgo, D. Ehrensaft, S. Rosenthal, N. Spack, and J. Olson wrote an article called "The Gender Affirmative Model: What We Know and What We Aim to Learn," in which they explained the basics of the affirmative approach. 🧵

If you consume fewer calories than you burn, you will lose weight. It's that simple.

This one, with , lays out what's really happening with respect to medicalization and surgeries for young people (admittedly, I thought it was less common than it is) and explains how intersex conditions do and do NOT relate to any of this.

Symposia like this with 8 authors take A LOT of time and effort to cobble together. And I made it free because I believe the article's value is in exposing as many people as possible to new ideas. I'm proud of the symposium and extremely grateful to everyone who participated.

It reminded me of being harassed and shunned by my woke colleagues for publishing in Quillette or defending JK Rowling back when I was still in academia. It felt a bit like an identity politics struggle session.

I'll be honest, while some people appreciated my good-faith attempt at exposing readers to a wide range of viewpoints on a volatile issue, I was disappointed at the overall response. Many missed the point and were upset about WHO I chose to publish.
