So, a thought experiment I’ve had since middle school is the following: You transport to a little-traveled country path in 1800 with your modern car. Full tank of gas. What is the best course of action? Even defining what your goals are is incredibly complicated.

My thinking: Cars are worthless without paved roads or fuel infrastructure, full stop. Goal is to disrupt timeline as little as possible. Ditch car, figure out how to get car into the nearest lake. When ready, put all clothes and belongings in trunk. Drown myself with the car.

I believe there was no better potential outcome of two superpowers gaining nuclear weapons than the end of the Cold War. Any future with iPhones is obviously on the right track. It would be insane to think I could engineer a better outcome.

Also, I believe drowning is better. Despite concerns with water source contamination, aquatic animals are much less likely to provide a host for the viruses and bacteria I carry. I’d need to ask a biologist to be sure.
